Reddit scams

Last updated September 18, 2026

The short answer

On Reddit the most reliable rule is that posting about a problem produces scam DMs within minutes. Nobody from a company will contact you through a Reddit DM to help, and the "recovery expert" who replies to a fraud post is the next scam.

Reddit is where people go to ask what to do, which makes it a real-time feed of vulnerable, motivated targets for anyone willing to watch it. Post that you are locked out of an exchange, that you have been scammed, or that your account is frozen, and the DMs arrive in minutes — support impersonators, recovery services, and helpful strangers with a link. The platform itself is fine; the problem is that describing your trouble publicly is an advertisement.

How Reddit scams work

  1. 1

    Support impersonation DMs

You post about an account problem with an exchange, a bank or a platform. Accounts posing as support DM within minutes offering to help, and direct you to a phishing page or ask for credentials.

  2. 2

Recovery services after a scam post

Post that you were defrauded and you will be offered recovery — for a fee, or for your wallet details. This is advance-fee fraud aimed at people already hurt, and it is relentless.

  3. 3

    Trade and marketplace cons

On buying, selling and trading subreddits, sellers push payment by Zelle, Cash App or PayPal Friends & Family, then do not ship. Verification systems exist but can be faked.

  4. 4

    Sponsored ads for counterfeit stores

Promoted posts advertise storefronts that take payment and ship nothing. A sponsored slot is bought, not vetted.

Warning signs

  • A DM arrives minutes after you post about a problem
  • Anyone offers to recover money you lost
  • A "support agent" contacts you through Reddit rather than the company's own channel
  • A trade requires PayPal Friends & Family, Zelle or Cash App
  • A seller's account is new or its history was recently wiped
  • You are asked to move to Telegram or WhatsApp to continue
  • A sponsored post leads to a store you cannot find any other way

Examples

DMs within four minutes

A user posts in a crypto subreddit that they are locked out of an exchange. Four minutes later, three DMs offer help. One directs them to a "wallet recovery" page requesting a seed phrase. The wallet is emptied that evening; the other two were the same operator on different accounts.

Friends & Family on a trade sub

A seller on a hobby trading subreddit with apparent confirmed trades asks for PayPal Friends & Family to avoid fees. Nothing ships. Friends & Family carries no Purchase Protection, which is why it was requested, and the trade confirmations were from accounts the seller also controlled.

What to do

  • Ignore every unsolicited DM, especially after posting about a problem.
  • Contact companies only through their own apps and websites.
  • Never pay for trades with Friends & Family, Zelle or Cash App. Use Goods & Services.
  • Never share a seed phrase, password or verification code with anyone, ever.
  • Report scam DMs to Reddit and to the moderators of the subreddit.

Report it to Reddit

Report the account at reddit.com/report and tell the subreddit moderators. Mods ban scam accounts faster than the platform does.

Getting your money back

A PayPal Goods & Services payment can be disputed; Friends & Family, Zelle and Cash App payments generally cannot, which is the entire reason they are requested. For crypto, file at ic3.gov immediately with transaction hashes. Whatever the loss, do not engage the recovery offers that follow — they target people who have just posted about being scammed, and paying one is a second, entirely predictable loss. Report the accounts to Reddit and the subreddit mods, who act faster.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I get DMs immediately after posting about a problem?

Because scam operations monitor subreddits for exactly those posts. A person describing a locked account or a lost sum is a pre-qualified target who has announced both their problem and their urgency. Treat every unsolicited DM after such a post as hostile.

Are Reddit trade subreddits safe?

They work when you use the protections: pay with PayPal Goods & Services, check the account's age and history, and never accept a request to use Friends & Family or a payment app. Confirmed-trade flair helps but can be manufactured with accounts the seller controls.

Can anyone actually recover money I lost to a scam?

Not for an up-front fee. Real recovery runs through your bank, the platform, and law enforcement via ic3.gov. Anyone who contacts you offering to retrieve funds — especially right after you posted about losing them — is running an advance-fee scam on someone they know is already hurting.
