Poshmark scams

The short answer

Poshmark scams almost always involve leaving the app. Posh Protect covers buyers for items that never arrive or are not as described — but only for orders paid for inside Poshmark. A seller or buyer asking to complete the deal elsewhere is asking you to give that up.

Poshmark holds a buyer's payment until they accept the item, and provides the shipping label, which means an in-app transaction has a genuine safety net on both sides. The scams are therefore all about getting outside it, and they are unusually persuasive here because the community is social — people chat, follow each other, and build relationships that make an off-app request feel like a favour between acquaintances rather than a risk.

How Poshmark scams work

  1. 1

    Off-app payment requests

A buyer offers to pay by Zelle, Venmo or PayPal Friends & Family to save fees. Outside Poshmark there is no escrow, no Posh Protect and no record of the agreement.

  2. 2

    Fake authentication services

A buyer of a luxury item insists on a third-party authenticator they choose, who requires a fee or the item itself. Poshmark authenticates items over $500 itself, free, as part of the order.

  3. 3

    Swapped returns

A buyer receives a genuine item, opens a case, and returns a counterfeit or a different item. Photographing and filming the outgoing item with its label is what defends against this.

  4. 4

    Fake payment notification emails

A seller receives a Poshmark-styled email saying funds are released pending shipment. The real balance only ever appears in the app.

Warning signs

  • Anyone proposes paying or being paid outside Poshmark
  • A buyer insists on their own authentication service
  • An email announces a payment the app does not show
  • A buyer asks you to ship somewhere other than the order address
  • You are asked to use your own shipping label
  • A new account makes a large purchase and pushes for speed
  • Someone asks for your email, phone number or Instagram to continue the conversation

Examples

Friends & Family for a handbag

A buyer offers $1,200 for a bag by PayPal Friends & Family, reasoning that it saves both of them the fees. The payment lands, the bag ships, and a week later the payment is reversed through a bank dispute. Friends & Family carries no Purchase Protection, which is precisely why it was proposed.

The authenticator who kept the boots

A buyer for $800 boots insists on an authenticator they name, asking the seller to ship there first. The "authenticator" confirms receipt and stops responding. Poshmark authenticates items over $500 itself at no cost, as part of the order — the entire step was invented.

What to do

  • Keep the payment, the messages and the shipping label inside Poshmark.
  • Use Poshmark's own authentication for items over $500. It is free and part of the order.
  • Film yourself packing every item with the label visible.
  • Confirm payment in the app, never from an email.
  • Open a case inside the app within the window if anything is wrong — it is short.

Report it to Poshmark

Report through the order in the app. Posh Protect applies only to orders paid for inside Poshmark.

Getting your money back

In-app orders have a real remedy: open a case against the order within the window and Poshmark holds or returns the escrowed funds. Off-app payments have effectively none — a PayPal Friends & Family payment is explicitly excluded from Purchase Protection, and Zelle transfers you authorised are not reversible. If you shipped against a fake payment email, report it to Poshmark and contact the carrier immediately, since an intercept is sometimes possible while the parcel is in transit.

Frequently asked questions

What does Posh Protect actually cover?

Buyers, for items that never arrive or are significantly not as described, on orders paid for inside Poshmark, when a case is opened within the stated window. It covers nothing paid outside the app, which is why every off-app request is worth refusing.

Should I use an outside authentication service?

No. Poshmark authenticates items over $500 through its own service at no charge as part of the order. A buyer insisting on a different authenticator — particularly one you ship to first — is describing a step that exists only to separate you from the item.

A buyer wants to pay by Friends & Family. Is that safe?

No. Friends & Family is explicitly outside PayPal's Purchase Protection, which is why it is suggested, and the payment can still be reversed through the sender's bank. There is no version of this request that is better for you than paying inside Poshmark.
