Report to Wells Fargo

Last updated September 18, 2026

The short answer

Report account, card and online-transfer fraud, and forward phishing

Wells Fargo runs a separate number for online payment and transfer fraud, covering Zelle, bill pay and wires. It is not the general fraud line, and using it gets you to the team that can act on a transfer. The bank also treats a phishing message you ignored differently from one you answered.

What they handle

  • Unauthorized transactions on Wells Fargo accounts and cards
  • Zelle, bill pay, direct pay, ExpressSend and digital wire fraud
  • Emails and texts impersonating Wells Fargo
  • Identity theft involving a Wells Fargo account
  • Unrecognised changes to your online profile

How to file a report

  1. 1

Pick the line that matches what happened

Personal checking, savings, debit or ATM card: 1-800-869-3557. Business accounts: 1-800-225-5935. Online payments and transfers: 1-866-867-5568. That last line covers Zelle, bill pay, direct pay, ExpressSend, digital wires, and any profile change you did not make.

  2. 2

Forward the phishing message, but only if you did not respond

Forward the suspicious email or text to reportphish@wellsfargo.com. Wells Fargo is explicit that this is the path for a message you did not act on.

  3. 3

If you did respond, call 1-866-867-5568

Clicking the link, entering credentials or replying puts you in the online-fraud path rather than the reporting path. The bank asks you to call that number instead of forwarding.

  4. 4

Report identity theft on the personal fraud line

Identity theft involving a Wells Fargo account goes to 1-800-869-3557, which also handles elder-fraud concerns. Wells Fargo publishes an identity theft assistance kit alongside it, covering the steps outside the bank.

What you'll need

  • The last four digits of the account or card
  • The date, amount and recipient of each disputed transaction
  • The original message, forwarded rather than screenshotted
  • Any credentials or codes you entered, so the right accounts get locked

What to expect

A claim is opened on the call and a compromised card is reissued. Card claim status has its own lines afterwards: 1-800-548-9554 for debit and 1-800-423-7618 for credit, Mon to Fri 7am to midnight ET. A transfer you authorised is a weaker claim than an unauthorized card charge. Report a Zelle or wire loss the same day if you can.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there a separate number for Zelle and online transfers?

A transfer is not a card charge. 1-866-867-5568 reaches the team that handles online payments and profile changes, which is where a Zelle, bill pay or wire case has to land. The general fraud line will move you there anyway.

I forwarded the email and then realised I had clicked the link. Is that enough?

No. Forwarding to reportphish@wellsfargo.com reports the message; it does not protect the account. Having interacted with it, call 1-866-867-5568.
