Report to Social Security (SSA)
Last updated September 18, 2026
The short answer
Report scams involving Social Security numbers, benefits, or impersonation
The Social Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General (SSA OIG) investigates fraud related to Social Security programs. If someone is impersonating the SSA, threatening to suspend your Social Security number, or misusing Social Security benefits, this is where to report it.
What they handle
- Calls or messages claiming to be from Social Security
- Threats to "suspend" your Social Security number
- Misuse of your Social Security number
- Social Security benefits fraud
- People falsely collecting benefits
How to file a report
- 1
Go to oig.ssa.gov
Click "Report Fraud, Waste, or Abuse."
- 2
Choose the type of fraud
Select whether you're reporting Social Security impersonation, number misuse, or benefits fraud.
- 3
Describe what happened
Include the date, what was said, and any phone numbers or email addresses used.
- 4
Submit your report
You can file online or call the SSA OIG hotline at 1-800-269-0271.
What you'll need
- A description of what happened (dates, what was said or done)
- Phone numbers, emails, or other contact info the scammer used
- If applicable, details about the person committing benefits fraud
What to expect
The OIG reviews reports and investigates patterns of fraud. For impersonation scams, your report helps them track and shut down phone numbers used by scammers. They won't resolve your individual case, but reports help law enforcement take action.
