Report to MoneyGram
Last updated September 18, 2026
The short answer
Report a MoneyGram scam by phone or through the online fraud form
MoneyGram takes fraud reports two ways, by phone and through an online form. Either way, speed decides whether anything can be done, because a transfer that has been collected is gone.
What they handle
- Money sent to a scammer by transfer
- Family emergency and grandparent scams
- Lottery and prize scams requiring a fee
- Government impersonators demanding payment
How to file a report
- 1
Call MoneyGram customer service
MoneyGram gives 1-800-926-9400 for reporting fraud. International customer service is on 0800 8088 019.
- 2
Or use the online fraud report form
MoneyGram takes reports through its own report fraud form on its website, which is the alternative to calling.
- 3
File with the FTC
MoneyGram points to the Federal Trade Commission, or 1-877-FTC-HELP, and to your state's Attorney General.
- 4
Report internet fraud to IC3 and police
If the fraud came through the internet, MoneyGram asks you to file with local police and with the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
What you'll need
- The reference number for the transfer
- The amount, date and receiver details
- The messages or calls that led to it
What to expect
MoneyGram investigates and can act if the money has not been collected. Once it has been picked up, recovery is unlikely and the case moves to law enforcement.
Frequently asked questions
Why do scammers ask for MoneyGram specifically?
Because a completed transfer is close to irreversible and the receiver only needs a reference number. That is also why no legitimate agency, utility or court ever asks to be paid that way.
