Report to Microsoft

The short answer
Report Microsoft tech-support scams and phishing sent in Microsoft's name
Almost every Microsoft scam starts the same way: an unsolicited call, pop-up or email offering to fix your computer. Microsoft does none of those things. It takes reports through a dedicated fraud form, and phishing gets reported inside Outlook rather than by email.
What they handle
- Unsolicited calls and pop-ups claiming to be Microsoft support
- Emails and messages using the Microsoft or Windows name
- Fake error screens with a phone number on them
- Phishing delivered to an Outlook or Hotmail account
How to file a report
- 1
Use the Microsoft fraud form
Report the whole interaction at reportfraud.microsoft.com. The form covers unsolicited phone calls, emails and pop-up messages from anyone claiming to be Microsoft or connected to it.
- 2
Report phishing from inside Outlook
Select the message in the list, then choose Junk, Phishing or Block Sender. Marking it as phishing reports the sender but does not block them, so add them to blocked senders too if you want that.
- 3
Check the sender against what Microsoft actually uses
microsoft-support@outlook.com and support@microsoft.net are not Microsoft. The company does not send unsolicited email or make unsolicited calls asking for personal or financial details.
What you'll need
- The phone number that called you, or that the pop-up told you to call
- The email address or sender name, and the message itself
- Any remote-access software you were asked to install
What to expect
The form is intake and does not produce a case-by-case reply. If you paid or let someone onto your machine, that part is urgent and goes to your bank, not to Microsoft. Disconnect the device and change passwords from a different one.
Frequently asked questions
A Windows pop-up gave me a support number. Is it ever real?
No. Microsoft never puts a phone number in an error message. A number on an error screen is the scam itself, and calling it is the step the whole thing depends on.
