Last updated September 18, 2026
The short answer
Report scams where someone pretends to be from the IRS
TIGTA (Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration) investigates IRS impersonation scams. If someone contacted you claiming to be from the IRS and demanded money or personal information, report it to TIGTA. Remember: the IRS will never call you to demand immediate payment or threaten arrest.
What they handle
- Phone calls from people pretending to be IRS agents
- Emails or texts claiming to be from the IRS
- Threats of arrest for unpaid taxes
- Demands for gift card payments for "tax debt"
- Fake IRS letters or notices
How to file a report
- 1
Go to tigta.gov
Navigate to the "Report a Crime or Complaint" page at tigta.gov/reportcrime-misconduct.
- 2
Fill out the report form
Describe the contact: was it a call, email, text, or letter? Include the exact date and what was said.
- 3
Include the scammer's details
Phone numbers, email addresses, names they used, and how they asked you to pay.
- 4
Submit
You can also call TIGTA at 1-800-366-4484.
What you'll need
- The date and time of the contact
- How you were contacted (phone, email, text, mail)
- The phone number or email address used
- What they said and what they asked for
- Whether you sent any money (and how)
What to expect
TIGTA uses reports to track IRS impersonation operations and work with law enforcement to shut them down. You won't get individual case follow-up, but your report contributes to enforcement actions.
