Report to H&R Block

Last updated September 18, 2026

The short answer

Tax phishing goes to the IRS and TIGTA, not just to H&R Block

A tax scam carrying the H&R Block name is almost always an IRS scam, so the reporting goes to the tax authorities. One rule settles almost all of them. The IRS does not start contact, or ask for personal information, by fax, email, text or social media.

What they handle

  • Emails and texts claiming to be the IRS or a tax preparer
  • Fake IRS letters and phone calls demanding payment
  • W-2 phishing aimed at payroll and HR
  • Fraudulent tax returns filed in your name

How to file a report

  1. 1

Forward the email as is to phishing@irs.gov

Do not click links, open attachments or reply. Forward it unchanged, then delete it.

  2. 2

Call TIGTA about a phone scam

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration takes these on 1-800-366-4484, and there is an online report route too.

  3. 3

    Check how the contact arrived

The IRS does not initiate contact or request personal information by fax, email, text or social media. A first contact through any of those is fake.

  4. 4

File Form 14039 if a return was filed in your name

That is the identity theft affidavit, and it is the route when someone has already claimed your refund.

What you'll need

  • The email, forwarded unchanged
  • The phone number that called you
  • Any notice or letter you received

What to expect

phishing@irs.gov is intake. A fraudulent return in your name is a longer process that runs through Form 14039 and the IRS identity theft unit.

Frequently asked questions

They emailed me a harmless question first, then sent a file. Is that normal?

It is a known tactic. Attackers build rapport with an innocuous email first, then send the malicious link or attachment. The second message arrives from someone you have already replied to.
