Report to Dell

The short answer

Report Dell phone and email scams, and why the search result was the trap

Dell names something most brands leave out. Scammers buy search ads so their number ranks above the real one. The support line you found by searching may never have been Dell at all.

What they handle

  • Calls and texts claiming to be Dell technical support or sales
  • Emails that appear to come from an @dell.com address
  • Fake Dell support numbers placed in search results
  • Suspicious activity on a Dell account

How to file a report

  1. 1

Report a phone or text approach

Report the interaction if someone contacted you by phone or text claiming to be Dell. Dell asks for it whenever you believe the contact was a scam.

  2. 2

    Report a suspicious email

If you received a suspicious email from an @dell.com address, or saw suspicious activity on your Dell account, Dell takes it through its reporting form.

  3. 3

Never give a password to a caller

Dell puts it plainly. No legitimate organisation will call you and ask for your password.

  4. 4

Report it to the FTC as well

Dell points to ReportFraud.ftc.gov for phone and email scams and for identity theft.

What you'll need

  • The phone number or email address that contacted you
  • Your Dell service tag, if a device was discussed
  • Details of any remote-access software you installed

What to expect

Dell acts on the impersonation. If you paid or let someone onto the machine, that part is urgent and goes to your bank and to disconnecting the device.

Frequently asked questions

I searched for Dell support and called the first number. Was that safe?

Not necessarily. Dell warns that scammers pay to rank their numbers above the real ones. Start from dell.com typed yourself rather than from a search result.
