This salvage car auction site has listings whose vehicle identification codes, run through the US road safety agency's public decoder, belong to different makes and years, three of the three we checked, and it asks members for a copy of a government photo ID. Its home page promises protected payments while every page we read says it is not directly involved in the sale and purchase of vehicles, so do not send money or a copy of your ID to this site or to anyone you meet here.

    Three listings we checked show the start of a vehicle identification code that the US road safety agency's public decoder reads as a different make and year. A BMW listing carries an older Honda minivan's code, a Hyundai carries a Fiat's, and a GMC pickup carries a Lexus sedan's.

  • Promises payment protection but disclaims the sale

    Its home page promises verified online payment with protection and help with the paperwork. Every page also says it is not directly involved in the sale and purchase of vehicles.

  • Asks for a copy of your photo ID

  • Names no company
